*AIR FRYER* ULTIMATE TOASTIE | CHEESE, HAM & MUSTARD TOASTED SANDWICH - Ninja Foodi 15 in 1 Recipe

This is a simple but seriously good toasted sandwich made in the Ninja Foodi 15 in 1 air fryer. Thick slices of buttered bread are layered with English mustard, ham and cheddar, then air fried at 200°C for 10 minutes with a flip at the halfway point. The result is crisp golden bread with melted cheese oozing out. Quality ingredients (real butter, good cheddar, decent ham) make all the difference here.

Ingredients

Sandwich
  • 2 slicesthick-sliced bread
  • soft butter, very soft
Filling
  • English mustard
  • ham
  • cheddar cheese, sliced

Method

  1. Butter both sides of both slices of bread generously with very soft butter, making sure to get right into the corners.

    ~2 min
  2. Spread English mustard on the inner side of one slice. Don't go overboard, just enough for a good kick.

    ~1 min
  3. Layer ham over the mustard, then top with sliced cheddar cheese. Close the sandwich with the second buttered slice.

    ~1 min
  4. Lift the sandwich carefully into the air fryer basket. If the top slice tends to lift away, push a couple of cocktail sticks in at an angle to hold it together.

    ~1 min
  5. Set the air fryer to 200°C and cook for 10 minutes. At the 5 minute halfway point, carefully flip the sandwich over, taking care not to break it.

    ~10 min
  6. Check at the end of the cook time. The toastie should be crisp and golden but not burnt. Every air fryer is slightly different, so adjust if needed.

    ~1 min
  7. Slice in half and serve straight away while the cheese is oozing. Lovely with a side of coleslaw.

    ~1 min

Frequently asked

Do I need to preheat the air fryer for a toastie?
No preheat is shown in this recipe. The sandwich goes straight in at 200°C for 10 minutes. If your air fryer runs cool, you can preheat for 2-3 minutes to help the bread crisp from the first minute.
How do I stop the top slice flying off in the air fryer?
Push a couple of cocktail sticks down through the sandwich at an angle before cooking. They hold the layers together against the fan. The butter usually keeps things in place anyway once it starts to melt.
What is the best bread for an air fryer toastie?
A thick-sliced loaf works best. Thin sandwich bread tends to crisp through too fast and can burn before the cheese melts. Thick slices give you a crisp outside and a soft, cheesy middle.
Can I use other fillings?
Yes, this method works for any toastie filling. Stick to ingredients that melt or warm through in 10 minutes (cheese, cooked meats, pickles, chutney). Avoid wet fillings that will make the bread soggy.
Why butter both sides of the bread?
Buttering the outside is what gives you that crisp, golden finish in the air fryer (the same job the pan does in a frying pan toastie). Buttering the inside is optional but adds flavour and richness.
